FUNNIEST CASE EVER - Ghost Busting [Feb. 12th, 2009|10:29 am]
Stambovsky v. Ackley (1991) New York County Supreme Court

Plaintiff, to his horror, discovered the house he had recently contracted to purchase was widely reputed to be possessed by poltergeists, reportedly seen by defendant seller and members of her family on numerous occasions over the last nine years. Plaintiff promptly commenced this action seeking rescission of the contract of sale. Supreme Court reluctantly dismissed the complaint, holding that plaintiff has no remedy at law in this jurisdiction.

Ten minutes into my Charter of Rights readings... [Jan. 5th, 2009|05:00 pm]
[Tags|, ]

...and I already want to beat someone's head in.

Jesus Christ, we enacted some really disgusting laws before the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was enacted.

Example, quoting directly:

In 1912, Saskatchewan enacted The Female Employment Act, which, in its entirety, read,

I. No person shall employ in any capacity any white woman or girl or permit any white woman or girl to reside or lodge in or to work in or, safe as a bona fide customer in a public apartment thereof only, to frequent any restaurant, laundry or any other place of business or amusement owned, kept or managed by any Japanese, Chinaman or other Oriental person.

2. Any employer guilty of any contravention or violation of this Act shall upon summary conviction be liable to a penalty not exceeding $100 and in default of payment to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two months.

And the worst part is, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld this law as valid. There just wasn't any recourse to get rid of it, because it was valid according to the constitution at the time.

One wonders what kinds of things we will look back on in 90 years and go "holy shit what crack were these people smoking?"

I'm guessing the first one in line is the Anal Intercourse law that's still on the criminal law books.

I Liiiiiiiiiiive! [Sep. 6th, 2008|01:46 pm]
[Tags|]

Wow, I was originally planning on doing a post each day for the first week. We can see how long that lasted /sarcasm

Anyway, I have successfully completed my first week of law school! I'm told it'll get a little easier after this, because while the workload is still insane, I will at least have a lighter schedule - in that it's not constant meeting and greeting, keynote speakers and such, in between my actual classes. We'll see if it actually feels any lighter :P

It's been an exhausting week, but a really good one. I've talked to quite a few people in my class who are all like "Oh, this is boring, blah blah" like you would expect out of students who go to school the world over, but I frankly disagree with them. I find all of my classes fascinating, personally, and I'm really looking forward to learning the subjects. Except Legal Methods, but who finds case citation interesting? :P That's more on the 'necessary pain' list, which is OK.

I was really glad to have a 'day off', though. (Foregoing in quotes because I'm spending most of the day working on readings and such)

All that being said, the workload is actually not as bad as I expected from what I was told. It's DOABLE, so long as I stay on top of things and don't let myself get behind. This is good, because I'm not enamoured with the idea of study groups. I will probably join one, if it's a discussion-type group, but I am not interested in splitting up my work amongst a group of people and having other people do the readings then explain it to me. I don't learn well that way, and I want to do all the readings myself, then learn it better by discussing it with others and attending class.

We shall see.

I've met a lot of really great people, too. Things haven't settled into cliques yet, either, so we'll see where I fall. There's one guy who I'm pretty much avoiding already, because he comes off as an arrogant ass every time he opens his mouth. Maybe now that the first week is over he'll feel less of a need to impress everyone around him with his awesomeness, but I doubt it. He just seems like that kind of person. Everyone else seems really nice and not irritating, and that's very cool.

First Day at School [Sep. 2nd, 2008|09:40 pm]
[Tags|]

Wow, today was a total whirlwind! I was supposed to go to this pub social tonight, but I was so exhausted that I gave myself the night off from social events. Besides, I've already met so many people that I feel I've fulfilled my obligations and then some for one day. I'm pretty introverted and shy, and I was determined not to let that stop me from meeting people today. It was all very draining, but I had a really good time, too.

Cut for probable length )

Wow, I really need to get off my ass and actually upload all the icons I have set aside for this journal. Anyway.

So Saturday was insanely busy, but I haven't done anything really since then, lol. And I guess that's good.

I went for a walk yesterday, wandered around campus and found my building, etc. I was actually looking for food as well, but everything was closed by the time I got to campus, and then I was so hungry that I texted Miko and asked her to find me the nearest Safeway, lol. I figured I'd eat some of their pre-prepared foods, and then get myself some snacks and such for home, and food to get me through the next few days before the offices opened up and I could get signed up for my meal plan.

Wow, that was a LONG FUCKING WALK. A 'wee' walk, as my family would say. (Inside jokes no one on the internets will get, yay!)

But I did find the Safeway, and I found a Pita Pit before that, and so food was had before I resorted to passing out to save energy. And I took a taxi home thankyouverymuch.

Yesterday and today I was a complete lump. Tomorrow morning I start orientation, and there is a bazillion and one things I need to do, but today it is Labour Day Monday, and there's really nothing I can do. I mean, I could have bought my school supplies, but I want to wait until I've been to school and seen whether I'll be taking paper notes, or laptop, or what. So there's no point.

I have been feeling a bit at loose ends, actually, but it's been good, too. I feel fully settled in here now, and comfortable in the house. I've met two of my three roommates and they seem decent. I still haven't met the third O_O;;; So far as I can tell, he hasn't been home all weekend. Oh well.

Tomorrow's my first day of school!

Moving In [Aug. 30th, 2008|02:52 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Well, I've arrived safe and sound in Winnipeg, and successfully moved into my place. It's smallish, and will probably get a little cramped with three other people in here, but it's furnished, and comfortable, and I have my own room with a lockable door. I predict that I will spend a LOT of time in here, and at the library, being antisocial studying and working and making use of the wifi.

My internet connection is a bit hit and miss because I'm in the basement, but it's functional.

I haven't met my roommates yet. Reportedly one works full time and the other (the only other female in the building) is 17 years old and in her first year of university. The last one has yet to move in - may be moving in today - and is in 2nd or 3rd year. My landlord is upstairs and he's really nice. I like him a lot. Hopefully I'll like my actual roommates just as much.

I didn't bring my camera, so there won't be pics of my digs other than what were on the craigslist post. It's a decent place for somewhere I don't have to live for a really long time. Besides, I have my computer, my PSP, my DS and my privacy. That's all I really need ^_^

I wish the internet were a bit faster though.
